Three Benefits of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a versatile treatment that can fix a variety of oral problems like spaces between teeth and deformed teeth. It is a non-invasive treatment that does require the removal of significant amounts of teeth enamel, unlike crowns or veneers.

The process involves the dentist using composite resins to fix damage to teeth and to correct cosmetic issues. The treatment is commonly used to address misshapen, cracked, chipped, stained, short or broken teeth. Dental bonding can also be used to close up small spaces between teeth.

The composites used for the treatment are mixtures of glass and plastics. When applied, the composite has a putty-like constituency, but it hardens when exposed to a curing light. Before restoring a tooth with composite bonding, the dentist will prepare it by roughening its surfaces with an etching solution. Doing this allows the composite to stick better to the tooth being treated.

Local anesthetics are typically used during composite bonding treatments with the exception of treating cavities. The patient does not experience pain during the treatment and there is no recovery period. Restorations made with composite resin can last up to five years.

The composite is applied to the patient's tooth in layers until the desired look is achieved. The dentist polishes the tooth to complete the treatment. The patient walks out of the clinic with their smile restored.

Benefits of dental bonding

Here are some of the popular reasons why patients sometimes choose repairs made with composites over restoring the appearance of teeth with restorations like veneers or crowns:

1. It is non-invasive and fast

Dental bonding involves placing the composite resin directly on the patient's enamel. The tooth is prepared for the treatment by roughening its surface with an etching solution or gel. A conditioner might also be applied on the tooth so the composite adheres better to it.

The dentist will work will the patient to select a composite that matches the color of their teeth. The composite is then applied to the patient's tooth in layers. Each layer is hardened with a curing light before moving on to the next layer. The dentist will finish the procedure by polishing the tooth so it is more resistant to stains and shines like a real tooth.

2. Affordable

Dental bonding is one of the most affordable treatments performed by dentists. The process is usually completed during a single visit unlike restorations like crowns and veneers – which require two visits to a dentist. Dental bonding takes about an hour to restore a tooth.

3. Versatile solution

Dental bonding can be used to address a variety of problems that affect the function and appearance of a patient's teeth. These include:

  • Stains and discoloration
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Deformed teeth
  • Cavities
